With less than 100 days to the federal election, SHOROC Mayors and General Managers met with federal members, Tony Abbott and Bronwyn Bishop to discuss major issues for the Northern Beaches.

Topics discussed included commonwealth support for transport and infrastructure upgrades across the Northern Beaches, constitutional recognition of local government as well current reviews into local government.

The Mayors and General Managers are in Canberra for the National General Assembly of Local Government conference and met with The Hon Tony Abbott MHR and The Hon Bronwyn Bishop MP on Tuesday 18 June.

President of SHOROC and Warringah Mayor Michael Regan says it is interesting times for both the SHOROC region and local government in general with the recent announcement about Northern Beaches Hospital and local government reviews.

“Construction on the Northern Beaches Hospital at Frenchs Forest is planned to start in 2014 which will be a boon to our area for both health and employment. However, road upgrades are needed now around the new hospital site in addition to more efficient public transport.

“Transport has been long identified as a major issue for the region and SHOROC has been advocating for targeted road upgrades, public transport including Bus Rapid Transit system and Northern Beaches tunnel. We will continue lobbying the state and commonwealth to commit to and support these vital road and public transport upgrades for better access to, from and within the SHOROC region.

“Councils are collectively doing everything we can to improve health and transport infrastructure for our region. We welcome the NSW Government’s commitment to build the new hospital by 2018 and pre-feasibility studies for the Bus Rapid Transit system, but we need commonwealth support. It makes a difference when you can make the case for region to federal members personally.

“Councils are collaborating to get the job done and it would be great to have the commonwealth as partners. What we want to know is if the federal Coalition is elected in September, is there potential commonwealth support for road upgrades around the new hospital site, Bus Rapid Transit infrastructure and the Northern Beaches Link under Mosman?” Mayor Regan said.

Other issues discussed included the Independent Local Government Review, constitutional recognition of local government and funding for Brookvale Oval.
