The SHOROC Councils have banned the kerbside collection and disposal of e-waste – or electronic waste – to landfill.
This means e-waste is no longer accepted in kerbside collections in the Manly, Mosman, Warringah and Pittwater Council areas.
E-waste includes televisions, computers, printers, scanners, modems, DVD players, CD players, VCRs and gaming machines.
This ban and lobbying by SHOROC has led to the Federal Minister for the Environment announcing the introduction of a nationwide e-waste recycling scheme from 2011 and the introduction of legislation for extended producer responsibility (EPR) to make manufacturers responsible for the recycling and safe disposal of e-waste. See the fact sheets below for more information.
Why the ban?
Hazardous substances from e-waste such as lead, cadmium and mercury leach into the soil when placed in landfill. Valuable resources that can be recycled are also lost.
Has the ban been successful?
The ban has been a huge success, with a recent collection recycling approximately 220 tonnes of electronic waste.
What can I do with my e-waste?
Residents of Manly, Mosman, Pittwater and Warringah Councils, showing proof of residency, in a car, ute or trailer, may deliver up to 5 items of electronic waste FREE at Kimbriki.
